The goal of Trees for Global benefits is to provide long-term sustained funding for the conservation of biodiversity and environmental management in Uganda. The project involves small-scale land holding farmers cost effectively sequestering CO2e through improved land management activities. These activities include single species woodlots, woodlots of mixed native trees, boundary planting, agroforestry, improved forest management and assisted regeneration.

Environmental Co-Benefits

  • Sites are selected based on where tree planting having multiple environmental benefits.
  • Communities who neighbour sites of ecological importance are specifically targeted.
  • Rehabilitation of degraded landscapes.
  • Conservation of threatened species through the planting of native tree species.
  • Small-scale production of fuel wood and timber reduces pressure on nearby forest reserves and national parks (avoided deforestation), helping to conserve local biodiversity.

Social Co-Benefits

  • Project’s support enables rural farmers to invest in sustainable resource management using payments received in instalments after activities have been monitored.
  • Participants gain access to local and national markets for timber and non-timber products.
  • Additaional activities such as nursery establishment provide additional income.
  • The mobilization and training of farmers is conducted in groups – many of whom form associations. The associations enable farmers to form marketing groups to assist in accessing markets for products such as honey and medicinal extracts.
  • Community banks are strengthened as the payments to the farmers come through them.
