Madre De Dios Amazon REDD Project
The project consists of the conservation of an area of 100,000 Ha through sustainable forest management in the forestry certified timber concessions “Maderera Río Acre S.A.C. and Maderera Río Yaverija S.A.C.” in Madre de Dios, Peru. The project area faces increasing land grab and deforestation pressures.
The area is located less than 50 km to the side of the new inter-oceanic road that will unite Brazil with the Peruvian ports, in the region that belongs to the Ecological Corridor Vilcabamba-Amboró in the Peruvian Amazon, one of the most important centers of biodiversity worldwide.
Environmental Co-benefits
- The project region belongs to the Vilcabamba-Amboro Conservation Corridor in the Peruvian Amazon, which is one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots
- Important populations of rainforest species considered to be endangered and vulnerable are protected by the project’s conservation
- The area is considered as High Conservation Value Forest owing to the species of fauna within it which are catalogued as vulnerable
- Soil quality is improved with sustainable management employed to prevent soil erosion and degradation
Social Co-benefits
- The project, with the support and management transparency of public institutions, aims to create a culture in Peru favorable to the principles of sustainable forest management
- The project promotes the feasibility of sustainable economic activities which reduces pressure on forests
- The geographically close populations to the project will benefit from extension and investment in basic services.
- The project focuses on increases in local employment, both skilled and unskilled. For example the project began by employing 8 people in 2006, and by the following year was employing 30.
