Arrozal, GGP & Sul America Ceramics
The Arrozal, GGP & Sul America Ceramic Facilities Fuel Switching Project, validated and verified by Social Carbon and VCS standards, encompasses three ceramic facilities in itaborai, Tres Rios and Pirai in the state of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. In the production of red ceramic bricks for the regional construction market, these facilities previously utilised heavy oil (BPF) in order to power their kilns. This project implemented a switch to renewable biomass fuels. This was a pioneer practice in the region and contributed to local sustainable development, generating a carbon neutral cycle.
Environmental Co-Benefits
The ceramic facilities are registered with FEEMA in order to operate legally in the ceramic industry. The attainment of this License of Operation means that the facility must adhere to specified environmental rules and procedures.
A portion of the fuel for the facilities is made up from industrial residues – reducing the addition of these residues to landfill. The facility produces very minimal ash during the production process. Any ash that is procured is incorporated within the clay dough and reused.
Social Co-Benefits
The facilities provide good employee benefits to their workers, such as health insurance, food stables, funeral assistance, recreational activities and performance incentives. There is some engagement of the facility with the wider community.
