Land and Project Site Selection Process

Citola works with government, communities and private landowners in the reforestation (revegetaion) and conservation of their properties and forestry ecosystem resources. As part of this process, Citola seeks to understand the specific site requirements and landholder objectives in-order to provide an appropriate project design and management plan.

Citola carbon forestry models are adaptable to most site locations and terrain characteristics.  When choosing a project site, the following broad guidelines need to be considered by Landholders:

  • Location (country, region);
  • Kyoto Compliant: Plantable area to have been cleared of vegetation prior to 31 December 1989;
  • Plantable area to be greater than 40 plantable Hectares;
  • Long-term average annual rainfall to be in excess of 500 mm;
  • Property is freehold land or with suitable tenure for project development;
  • Soil depth and soil type to be sufficient to allow good soil moisture holding capacity.

Suitable project sites include:

  • Property and creek boundaries, hilly terrain and areas not suitable for crops or livestock;
  • Farming, grazing or cleared land;
  • Farm forests, existing plantings or forestry projects; and
  • Plantation forests, rainforests and ecosystems.

Site Selection Factors

Other project site considerations:

  • Moisture – rainfall greater than 500mm;
  • Planting Size greater than 40 Ha;
  • Minimal Infrastructure;
  • Site must be within 150 km from major centres;
  • Be clear of permanent waterways and power lines;
  • Well drained soils;
  • Slopes less than 20%; and
  • A mix of no less than 60% clear & 40% regrowth able to have forest practise conducted.

In addition to standard parameters as a baseline Citola looks to and gives preference to properties that:

  • Conform to current, regional management and tenure policies;
  • Target Species – What native species occur on the property?
  • Sites productivity needs to be capable of achieving a minimum of 15 MAI (mean annual increment);
  • Are there any forestry plantations in the area?
  • Be bordered by adequate firebreaks;
  • Soils with good rooting depth of >500mm, well drained, good nutrient availability, A pH of 5 - 7;
  • Low erosion potential generally alluvial soils; and
  • Altitude less than 1200m with sheltered aspects and limited frosts.
