Forestry

Citola specialises in the origination and management of forestry ecosystem assets for global markets.

Citola manages the entire origination, management and monetisation process and, with the appropriate project opportunity in-place, structures project finance investment into each project through different mechanisms to maximise the commercial and environmental benefits to stakeholders.

Projects are designed to deliver multiple plantation outcomes including carbon, agriculture, biomass and high-value timber products derived from one of the following scenarios:

  • Harvested: Carbon (av.) and timber outcome from harvested forest;
  • Combination: Carbon outcome from non-harvested forest (i.e. 25% of forest stand) AND Carbon (av.) and timber outcome from harvested forest (i.e. remaining 75% of forest stand); and
  • Non-Harvested: Carbon outcome (100%) from non-harvested forest.

Forestry Ecosystem Asset Management

Citola core competencies include proprietary forestry design, management and monetisation methodologies that have been developed through an iterative process over fifteen years. Key points of Citola’s forestry philosophies include:

  • Nature knows best: Plant and manage tree species native to the region as they have evolved to be well adapted for growth, form and risk resilience.
  • Forest structure and diversity is security: Native biodiverse tree species create compositional diversity to maximise growth and create a robust and resilient ecosystem as an additional security enhancement.
  • Realise the inherent value of forest ecosystem: Forests are managed as an ecosystem to maximise natural process and improve the capacity to produce premium timber and incremental environmental-based products.

Forestry Ecosystem Asset Models

Citola develops reforestation, sustainable forestry and avoided deforestation (REDD) projects according to the project objectives and the location (terrain).

  • Reforestation: Long-term revegetation (forestry) planting with the predominant purpose of carbon sequestration
  • Improved Forestry Management: Conservation of forestry ecosystems, conversion of low-productive forest to high-productive forest
  • Sustainable Forestry: Sustainable timber harvest in-parallel to environmental (carbon) outcomes from permanent forest
  • Avoided Deforestation: Conservation of rainforest through enforced protection.  Carbon offsets and ecosystem services generated through avoiding deforestation

Citola project structures are designed to maximise the environmental and commercial benefits to project stakeholder sand be adaptable to different terrain, standards and markets globally.

Sustainable Forestry Products

Sustainable forestry products from Citola projects include:

  • Value-added timber products, sawlog, pole, log and fencing timber
  • Carbon offsets, biodiversity offsets and conservation certificates
  • Biomass for energy and heat generation
  • 'Buffer' land for agricultural purposes (leasing)

Forestry Services

Citola’s forestry management ensures that economic, environmental, cultural and social factors are integrated into effective forestry implementation plans and include:

  • Forest auditing and certification
  • Forestry (carbon) modelling and yield analysis
  • Project feasibility analysis
  • Project structure and design
  • Project establishment, management and reporting
