Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme

Citola provides carbon offsets, provisioned through forestry mechanisms, to organisations who have anticipated compliance requirements in the future Australia Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) or subsequent legislation.  The carbon offsets are delivered according to a Framework Agreement over a pre-determined price and timetable (generally 10-25 years).

Citola carbon forestry projects are independently verified and designed to satisfy the additionality test under the Kyoto protocol which ensures project eligibility for carbon offset verification under recognised international carbon standards such as the Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS) or Carbon Fix.

Australian Emission Units (AEUs)

The proposed Australian Emission Units (AEUs) will be government issued permits that can be bought through auctions, purchased on the secondary market or created through forestry mechanisms.  A Citola forestry carbon offset, eligible as an AEU, will be a highly attractive option to have price certainty and meet future compliance obligations.

About the CPRS

The Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) is the main legislation behind the Australian Government's plan to reduce Australia's greenhouse gas emissions through an emissions trading scheme (cap and trade mechanism). The CPRS is proposed to commence in 2012 with voluntary action supported earlier.

The CPRS will cover around 75% of Australia’s total emissions and will require any company that emits more than 25,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases per year (~1,000 companies) to purchase (or receive) a specific number of carbon permits that correspond to the amount of carbon pollution they are allowed to emit. The total amount of carbon permits issued overall cannot exceed the government cap and as the cap is lowered it will reduce the level of carbon pollution emitted each year.

Forest carbon, generated through eligible forestry projects, is the only form of offset generation that will be allowed under the CPRS legislation (excluding free permits issued by the government) and will be bankable, tradable and able to be retired as per Government issued permits.
