Carbon Farming Initiative
Through the Australian Carbon Farming Initiative, Citola provides client access to a long-term fixed price provision of Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) eligible in the Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI), National Carbon Offset Standard (NCOS) and subsequent carbon price legislation.
Citola manages the entire carbon offset origination, management and delivery process and works with clients to understand their specific requirements, timelines and governance objectives in-order to provide carbon products with an appropriate fee/investment structure.
Citola carbon forestry projects are designed and independently verified to approved methodologies by the Australian Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency and satisfy the additionality test under the Kyoto protocol ensuring flexibility for international carbon standards.
Citola focuses on higher-rainfall sites and through a combination of factors is able to achieve up to 500% increased carbon yields from traditional reforestation monoculture, marginal landscape plantings. This results in:
- Lower wholesale cost per tCO2;
- Increased risk management through diversified project portfolio and bio-diverse plantings;
- Incremental environmental revenue streams and ecosystem services;
- Increased security enhancements including land and timber assets; and
- ‘Pay-on-delivery’ product structures (removing client exposure to underlying land/forestry assets).

Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) – CFI/NCOS
The Carbon Farming Initiative creates a regulatory framework for the creation of carbon offsets called Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs). ACCUs will be regulated to the highest standards of carbon accounting, auditing and reporting as a Australian domestic carbon unit exchangeable with internationally tradeable Assigned Amount Units (AAUs) ‘Kyoto Units’.
The Carbon Farming Initiative has proposed that eligible forestry activities include:
- Reforestation/Revegetation;
- Improved Forest Management;
- Reduced logging (sustainable forestry); and
- Enhanced forest growth (conservation/protection with input such as weed removal);
- Avoided Deforestation
About the Carbon Farming Initiative
The Carbon Farming Initiative is a carbon offsets scheme established by the Australian Government to provide new economic opportunities for farmers, forest growers and landholders and help the environment by reducing carbon pollution.
The Carbon Farming Initiative includes:
- Legislation to establish a carbon crediting mechanism;
- Fast-tracked development of methodologies for offset projects; and
- Information and tools to help farmers and landholders benefit from carbon markets.
