Citola Carbon Project Development for Carbon Farming Initiative
Citola is currently undertaking the establishment of carbon reforestation projects in Victoria, Australia to provide clients a carbon offset product in preparation for the Australian government Carbon Farming Initiative legalisation and subsequent carbon price legislation (which is a hot topic in Australia at present).
Citola Carbon Project Site
Reforestation is designed to have minimal ongoing management of the project site post-planting. This translates that the majoirty of the work involved to develop the project is upfront in the design, structure and implementation of the project. This is where Citola has refined processes that ensure an optimum project delivery and on-ground, environmental and commercial outcome particulary with the market requirements to develop projects that deliver carbon offsets at significnat scale.
Indigenous plant seed was collected from the project site and neighbouring reserve to ensure local provenance and the best project outcome (I.E. increased risk resilience from local provenance). The plants were then grown in Hyco cell and forestry tubes to an average height of 200mm.
The site was slashed to reduce weed with a follow up application of weed treatment to restrict the weed reshooting. Weed treatment with dye was utilised to spray 750mm spots for planting at an average spacing of 5m X 5m to reduce competition for planted seedling and maximise tree growth. A 10 m buffer on the external boundary was established as a fire break. A bobcat was used with a planting auger used at the centre of each sprayed patch to a depth of 300 – 400 mm. Citola is developing a propertiary planting auger that will improve planting efficiencies for spot-cultivated sites and terrain.
Planting was conducted by Citola staff using 'Potti Pukkis'. For larger project sites (and less hilly terrain), Citola utilises rip-mounding ground preparation to increase the efficiency of planting and ensure optimum growing conditions for the trees.
Citola Carbon Farming Initiative Products
Citola provides client access to a long-term, fixed price provision of carbon offsets (Australian Carbon Credit Units - ACCUs) eligible in the Australian Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) and subsequent carbon price legislation.
