Chilling News On Hot Topic
If it weren't so warming, the news would be chilling. The United States, home of some of the archest climate sceptics, is sitting up and paying attention to a report from its National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA). The news is – you guessed it, or something like it – that the past decade was the hottest on record.
Cue those data sceptics. The scientists are skewing the material to suit their prejudices, aren’t they?
Well, given that, according to an NOAA academic, the sources for the report’s conclusions are “data collected from diverse sources, including satellites, weather balloons, weather stations, ships, buoys and field surveys”, you have to wonder that maybe there’s something in all this.
Meanwhile, we’re getting some action from Indonesia (which has a massive forestry carbon sink, and has done a bilateral deal with Norway for sustainable development, as regular visitors to this site may recall). The tone and purpose of the calls have much in common with what we’re seeing in the US.
And back in dear old Oz, we’re seeing the state of Victoria throw itself into the fray by asking farmers, and the forestry industry, amongst others, to play an active role in the establishment of a carbon exchange. As readers may know, carbon exchanges are yet another topic that divides opinion sharply. We believe, however, that the active participation of agriculture and land husbandry (especially forestation) can only be welcome. Here’s the latest report.
