Carbon Emissions will Rise without New Policy Action
The Australian Minister for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, Greg Combet, has today released a statement stating that carbon emissions will continue to rise without ‘decisive and effective new policy action’.

The report, Australia’s Emissions Projections by the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, takes into consideration current policies to reduce Australia’s carbon pollution and predicts that without further action, emissions will continue to rise.
“In 2020, emissions are projected to be 24 per cent above 2000 levels – that’s a further projected increase from current levels,” Mr Combet said. “Clearly more needs to be done, and that’s why we need a carbon price, soon.”
Mr Combet continued, “We are tracking to be two per cent below our Kyoto target and a carbon price can work with appropriately targeted energy efficiency and renewable energy policies to drive the necessary transformation of our economy.”
Citola is supportive of the Government position that a carbon price is essential as the primary driver of the economic transformation required to set Australia on the path towards a low carbon economy. In addition, Citola supports the Carbon Farming Initiative as a mechanism to drive positive land-use change and forestry abatement.
"The Carbon Farming Initiative will allow rural landholders to reap the benefits of their efforts towards tackling climate change by earning income from undertaking approved emission reduction and sequestration activities," Mr Combet said. "Rural landholders will be able to participate in and benefit from the Carbon Farming Initiative by generating and trading carbon credits."
